History of the School

“The mental attitude we take towards anything determines to a greater or lesser extent its effect upon us." - Duncan Hulin

Duncan Hulin founded the Devon School of yoga after the culmination of many years of practice, study and teaching. He started practising yoga in 1976. This led to him travelling on a yoga inspired trip to India for 6 months in 1982/83 where he ended up studying specifically with Dr B.P. Pillai of the Institute for Yogic Culture and Yoga therapy in Trivandrum, Kerala, South India. Dr Pillai was a chela (student) of Swami Sivananda Paramahamsa of Kerala.  Duncan started teaching yoga in 1983 after a three month intensive course with Dr Pillai. His teaching continued from 1983 - 1989, after which he established the East Devon Yoga Centre. Here he developed classes and regular workshops covering all aspects of yoga. This culimintated in the creation of the Devon School of Yoga in 1993.

The school initially ran a one year Foundation Course followed by a one year Teacher Training Course. By the end of the 1990's, the Teacher Training Course became a 500 hour, two year course (44 days over 20 weekends) and the Foundation Course became a 10 day course set over five monthly weekends. This format remains today.

The whole ethos of the school has maintained Dr Pillai's philosophy of 'small is beautiful.' The evolution of the school over the past twenty seven years has been a natural, organic process to become what the school is today.

Originally, the first courses were taught mainly by Duncan Hulin. However, from the outset he always had guest teachers offering their expertise in their areas of specialist knowledge. e.g. yoga philosophy, anatomy & physiology, etc. Subsequently, as the school's courses developed, there is now a dedicated faculty of ten teachers.

In addition to the foundation and teaching courses, since 2010 the school has been offering a Post Graduate Teacher Training and Yoga Therapy Course. This 250 hour course (26 days over 12 weekends) has been empowering the confidence and spirit of yoga teachers to work as yoga therapists helping a broader spectrum of people in society.

An important aspect of all the school's courses has been the inclusion of the residential/retreat experience. Over the years these have taken place in France, Spain, and India, as well as Devon. The retreat experience, besides forging friendships, also offers students the opportunity to eat together, wake up & practice in silence together, enjoy Kirtan (chanting) and the experience of Sangha (yoga community). Currently all the course's residentials are held in Devon with longer retreats held annually in North India.

The 500 hour Devon School Of Yoga Teacher Training Course qualification, has become widely respected  throughout the yoga community and DSY teachers have a good reputation for their professionalism and integrity.

In 2012 Duncan Hulin founded the Devon Yoga Festival. This popular annual event brings together the yoga sangha in the spirit of non-dogmatic, holistic practices. This not for profit and non-commerical event donates proceeds to charity.

The school continues to evolve with the ethos of holistic yoga as an ongoing inspiration.
